ITM alumni webinar series featuring the winners Prize for Global Research 2024 of the Province of Antwerp
ITM Alumni webinar #4: “Development of a biosecurity assessment questionnaire for pig farms in a resource poor area”
- Thursday 7 November 2024, 3 – 4 pm (Belgian time, CET)
- Register via Zoom
This new series of ITM alumni webinars features the four ITM winners of the Prize for Global Research 2024. The Prize for Global Research is awarded yearly by the Province of Antwerp to research projects of ‘master-after-master’-students of ITM and other Higher Education Institutes. Development relevance, quality and originality of the master theses are key in the selection. Through this award, the Province of Antwerp wants to stimulate global research.
In webinar #4, MGOH-alumna and laureate Fien Coudenys (Belgium) will share insights from her master thesis, entitled “Development of a biosecurity assessment questionnaire for pig farms in a resource poor area”.
Pig diseases can have a significant impact on both economics and public health. Biosecurity levels can be measured using a biosecurity assessment tool, which has the potential to raise awareness around the importance of biosecurity on farms, while at the same time offering the opportunity to highlight a lack of biosecurity implementation and provide farm-specific advice.
Currently, there are a handful of biosecurity assessment tools available for pig farms, but few of these specifically target pig farms in resource-poor areas. Several studies have highlighted the importance of biosecurity in pig disease management, but knowledge on this topic is currently lacking. Fien’s work aims to contribute to the development of such a biosecurity assessment tool specifically targeting these resource-limited areas.
In this webinar, Fien will present the main findings and outcomes of her Master of Science in Global One Health thesis and discuss her recommendations and conclusion. The Q&A-session is moderated by ITM researcher Chiara Trevisan. The purpose of the Q&A session is to address questions from the audience and to exchange experiences from other contexts.
