Visceral leishmaniasis also called kala-azar is one of the deadliest vector-borne neglected tropical diseases. Currently, the East Africa region is with the highest burden of the disease after elimination program have shown success in the Indian subcontinent which historically used to be the highest burden region. In June 2023, the East African countries expressed their commitment aiming visceral leishmaniasis elimination from the region by 2030. While the commitment is appreciable, there are several accelerated measures that need to be taken to achieve this goal.
In light of the World NTD Day, ITM alumnus Ermias Diro will share his insights on the challenges of visceral leishmaniasis elimination in East Africa.
