Joanna Herat

Joanna Herat is a Senior Programme Specialist on Health and Education at UNESCO (Paris), providing technical leadership and policy support for education sector responses to improve health and wellbeing. Her areas of technical leadership are HIV prevention, comprehensive sexuality education, school-related gender-based violence, early and unintended pregnancy and gender equality.
Before joining UNESCO, Joanna worked for with civil society at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance supporting community-based HIV interventions in Africa and Asia, with a focus on key populations. She started her career teaching and managing theatre for HIV education programme in Tanzania and Cameroon.
Joanna has a Masters in Anthropology of Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
